John McGrath Jr

Jerseyville—John M. McGrath, Jr., 65, passed away at 10:10 p.m. Thursday, December 1, 2016 at his home.

Born Nov. 23, 1951 in Anchorage Alaska, he was a son of John M. McGrath, Sr. and Mary Ellen (Greenan) McGrath.

He married Sandra Ladd Dec. 1, 1979.  She survives.

John was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked as a laborer.

Also surviving are his parents; his children, Tammy Sawyer, Beth Anna McGrath, Rebecca (Craig) Suermann, Stephanie Monroe, Heather Irene McGrath, John M. “J.J.” (Georgia) McGrath III, and Shawn D. McGrath: 20 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; two sisters, Michele Y. McCool and Anna Marie Blankenship; and a brother, William E. McGrath.

He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Ryan and Abigail McGrath; and his grandmother, Irene “Dit” Greenan.

A Celebration of Life service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 at Paynic Home for Funerals in East Alton.  At the conclusion of the service, visitation will continue until 2:30 p.m., when military rites will be performed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family.
