Mabel Lee Gruen, age 89 of Greenville, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the Donnell–Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. Interment will follow in Campground Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until service time Sunday at the Donnell–Wiegand Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Campground Cemetery or the activity department at Hitz.

Mabel Lee Walker, the daughter of Hope Hull Walker and Elsie LeBegue Walker, was born December 14, 1936, in Bond County, Illinois. Mabel grew up in Bond County and attended the local schools graduating from Greenville High School.

Mabel and Lonis LaMar Gruen were united in marriage on June 23, 1956, at the Greenville First United Methodist Church. LaMar passed away on November 6, 2018, after 62 years of marriage. They were both members of the Greenville United Methodist Church. Mabel loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with them. She and LaMar enjoyed traveling and sightseeing. They took an adventure on the Lewis and Clark Trail and turned a few days' exploration into weeks. They also enjoyed vacationing in Germany, Canada, and throughout the US. She had a great love for birds, especially hummingbirds and cardinals, as well as the great outdoors in general. 

Mabel worked alongside her husband doing the bookkeeping for their business, Gruen Welding Service, which they opened in 1962. They later added Gruen Sales and Service in 1984. They sold the business in 2007 and enjoyed retirement together. 

Surviving are their five children: Terri Lynne (Carl) Lurkins of Greenville, Lonis LaMar “Lonnie” (Sheree) Gruen Jr. of Greenville, Jon Hope (Dana) Gruen of Oakley, IL, Richard Allen (Lori) Gruen of Moweaqua, IL, Gary Lee (Paula) Gruen of Mt. Zion, IL, surviving siblings: brothers Hope Walker (Donna) of Greenville, William Walker (Suzanne) of Greenville, Troy Walker of Greenville, sisters-in-law Joyce (Bruce) Clanton of Mulberry Grove and Carol (Wayne T.) Gruen of Olympia, Washington, and brother-in-law Bill (Marjorie) Harter of Keyesport.  Mabel was the loving grandmother of: Michelle (Todd) Reinacher, Heather (Trevor) Henkhaus, Shawn (Amanda) Lurkins, Joseph (Whitney) Gruen, Timothy Gruen, Nichole (Jeff) Wilson, Sara Watson, Corinne (Danny) Likins, Paige Gruen, Logan (Kailey Jean) Myers, David (Shania) Myers, Hannah Gruen, Rachel (Nathan) Farmer, Sarah (Ayden) Riggleman, great-grandchildren: Mayzee, Teyton, Tenley, Haley, Kaleb, Tucker, Oliver, Taylor, Tanner, Heyden, Elly, Jesse, and Dean.

Mabel is preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson Joshua Watson, and siblings: Doris Shoaf, Jeannine Gobberdiel, Marilyn Hartoebben, and Lloyd Walker.
