Marie Arbelia Woelfel, 87, passed away at 9:15 p.m., Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at Calhoun Nursing and Rehab Center in Hardin.

Marie was born on November 5, 1937, in Jerseyville, the only child of the late Charles Henry and Pauline (Powell) Prill. She graduated with the Class of 1955 from Jersey Community High School and went on to attend Hickey Business College, where she honed the skills that would support her lifelong professional endeavors.

On October 13, 1957, Marie married the love of her life, Richard Anthony Woelfel, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville. Together, they built a life centered on family and faith, raising two children and cherishing the joys of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren that followed. They shared 62 beautiful years together before Richard’s passing on January 5, 2020.

Marie dedicated her professional career to the field of Abstract and Title work in Jerseyville. She began her career with the Gibbons Law Office and alter spent many years with Suddes-Davis & Wittman, where she was highly regarded for her meticulous attention to detail. In her retirement, Marie continued to serve her community by working part-time in the Recorder of Deeds office within the Jersey County Clerk’s Office under the leadership of Linda Crotchett. In this role, she played an integral part in the digitization of land records and assisted with elections. Known for her integrity, efficiency, and strong work ethic, Marie was beloved by her colleagues and the community alike.

Beyond her professional life, Marie had a deep passion for the arts and creativity. An avid painter, she and Richard made a wonderful team – he with his woodworking talents and she adding the final artistic touches to their creations. She also loved crafting, cross-stitching, and creating personalized gifts for her family and friends, which will forever be cherished as keepsakes of her love and talent.

A lifelong member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, Marie lived her faith through her active involvement in the church. She participated in numerous parent groups, alter society projects, always offering of her time to support her church. Her deep devotion to her faith served as an inspiration to her family and friends.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Christine and John Bane of Snyder, Texas; a son, Mark Woelfel of Jerseyville; three grandchildren, Callie (Kevin) Hildebrand of Katy, Texas; Andrew (Kasaundra) Bane of Snyder, Texas and Brett Woelfel of Jerseyville; two great-grandchildren, Kale and Sonny Bane; along with many extended family members, all of whom will miss her deeply.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville. Father Martin Smith will officiate, with the assistance of Marie’s son-in-law, Deacon John Bane.

Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fieldon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic School, in support of the faith and education that were so important to Marie throughout her life.

Marie’s kindness, devotion, and creative spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
