Save

Mark Alan Plunkett, 75, passed away on October 22, 2025.

Mark proudly served two tours in Vietnam as a Navy SEAL, earning two Purple Hearts. After his military service, he met the love of his life, Yoland, whom he adored. They were married for forty-seven years and built a life together filled with laughter, challenges, and stories worth retelling. Together, they had six children and 13 grandchildren they loved beyond measure.

Mark spent 22 years in radio, combining his humor and storytelling across WJIL-WJVO, WBGZ, and through his work with the State of Illinois. He also served the City of Alton for many years and shared his passion for broadcasting as head of the Radio Program at Lewis and Clark Community College.

He will be remembered for his sharp wit, his unmistakable voice, and his ability to captivate any room—whether on air, in person, or through one of his many stories.

Mark was preceded in death by his wife, Yoland Plunkett, and granddaughter, Mabel Grace Rench.

He is survived by his six children—Julianne (Dustin) White, Sam Plunkett, Katie (Caleb) Rench, Sally (Dave) Kirbach, Luke Plunkett, and Andy Plunkett—and twelve grandchildren; Ella, Jonathan, Annagrace, Henry, Lucy, Oliver, Myles, Micah, Karlee, Madison, Lillian, Jackson.

A Memorial mass will start at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 4, 2025 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you tune in to your favorite radio station, turn up the volume, and think of Mark doing what he did best—living life on his own terms.

Gent Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Additional information and online guestbook may be found at www.gentfuneralhome.com.
