Martha “Marti” Katherine (Walz) Hankins, of Jerseyville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2026, at the age of 84.
Born on July 11, 1942, to Gerald (Fred) and Ruth (Crane) Walz, Marti lived a life filled with hard work, adventure, generosity, and a deep love for family and friends.
Marti began working as a teenager and remained dedicated to her work until her retirement in 2001. Her strong work ethic was a reflection of the determination and independence that carried her throughout her life. But beyond her years of hard work, Marti knew how to enjoy life and make lasting memories with the people she loved.
Some of Marti’s happiest memories were made on the water. She and her beloved husband, Glendon “Harold” Hankins, spent countless weekends boating on the beautiful waters of the Lake of the Ozarks before later enjoying their time on the Mississippi River. Those weekends were filled with sunshine, laughter, and wonderful times shared with many dear friends. Boating was more than a pastime for Marti; it was a cherished part of her life, bringing together her love of the outdoors, friendship, and adventure. She continued to enjoy boating until Harold’s passing in 2011.
Following Harold’s death, Marti embraced a new chapter of life by traveling with family and friends. Whether visiting the bright lights of Las Vegas, enjoying the warmth of Mexico and the Dominican Republic, exploring the beauty and history of Italy, or traveling to destinations throughout the United States, Marti welcomed the opportunity to experience new places and create treasured memories along the way. Her love of travel reflected her adventurous spirit and her appreciation for the experiences that make life special, especially when shared with others.
Above all, Marti will be remembered for her generous heart and the love she had for her family. She especially cherished her many nieces and nephews, who held a special place in her life.
Her kindness, thoughtfulness, and willingness to give of herself were qualities that those who knew her will long remember. She valued the connections she made throughout her life and treasured the friendships and family relationships that brought her joy.
Marti was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Ruth Walz; her beloved husband, Glendon “Harold” Hankins; her sister, Ruth Lamb; her brothers, Patrick Walz, Richard Walz, and Michael Walz; and her sister-in-law, Leona Walz.
She is survived by her brother, James Walz, along with her many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss her greatly.
Marti’s life was a beautiful blend of dedication, adventure, friendship, and family. From weekends spent boating on the water to journeys across the country and abroad, she made the most of the opportunities life gave her. Her generous spirit and the memories she created with those she loved will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
Though she will be deeply missed, Marti leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and wonderful memories that will continue to bring comfort and smiles to those whose lives she touched. May she now find peace, reunited with Harold, and forever remembered with love.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Jerseyville Manor Memory Care for the kindness, compassion, and loving care they provided Marti during the final stage of her life. Their support and dedication will always be appreciated.
A celebration of Marti’s life will be held at a later date. Family and friends will have an opportunity to come together to honor her memory and celebrate the life of a woman who meant so much to so many.
