Maurice J. Schulz, 78, passed away at 10:32 am Saturday, February 1, 2017 at St. Anthony’s Hospital.

He was born December 8, 1939 in Alton, IL the son of Edmund and Helen (Merkle) Schulz.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he was a former organist and loved trains.  Maurice served as a Captain in the United States Air Force with primary duty at Fairchild Air Force Base where he was a B-52 navigator.  He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Alton where he was a 4th degree Knight.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy Schulz, their son John (Madalyn) Schulz of Eudora, Kansas, three grandchildren, Theresa Whittle, Derek (Morgan) Ogan, and Emily (William) McKown, one great granddaughter Ellie McKown, two siblings, Agnes Nelson of Louisville, Kentucky,  John (Betty) Schulz of Indianapolis, Indiana, and sister-in-law Joann Schulz of St. Charles, Missouri. In addition, he loved and adored his cousins, Rosemary Dodgen along with her children and grandchildren and Rachel Ernst with sons Dave and Tom.

He is preceded in death by three brothers Ralph, Edgar, and Harold Schulz, and sister Margaret Schulz, brother-in-law, Ed Nelson and a sister-in-law, Jean Schulz.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Friday February 3, 2017 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton where a Rosary service will be held at 4 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am Saturday February 4, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton with Fr. John Wykes OMV celebrant.

Burial will follow at St. Joseph cemetery in Alton where military rites will be conducted by Alton VFW Post 1308.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Church, Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George or Masses.
