Peggy Marie Goudy, age 70, of Glen Carbon, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 1, 1956, in Granite City, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Glenn and Elvera (Darner) Stagner.
On March 20, 1976, Peggy married the love of her life, John Goudy, in Madison, Illinois. Together, they shared 50 wonderful years of marriage, building a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. One of their greatest joys was traveling the country together on John’s Harley-Davidson. Peggy was known to pack enough for another passenger, much to John’s amusement. Along the way, they shared countless laughs, unforgettable experiences, and wonderful memories with dear friends who made every adventure even more special. But through it all, the greatest joy was simply being together, sharing the open road and a lifetime of love.
Above all, Peggy loved her family. She had a wonderful sense of humor, loved to laugh, and found happiness in the simple joy of being together. She enjoyed shopping, especially when it meant finding something special for someone she loved. Being a mom and Maw Maw brought her immeasurable happiness. Peggy took great pride in her grandchildren and made every effort to be present for their special events, activities, and important milestones. Whether cheering them on from the sidelines, attending school functions, or celebrating their accomplishments, she cherished every opportunity to show her love and support. Being there for her grandchildren meant the world to her, and she made sure they knew just how much they meant to her. Through the way she lived and loved, Peggy taught her family to cherish one another, let go of grudges, and always stay close.
Those who knew Peggy knew just how special she was. She had a genuine kindness that could be felt by anyone who met her, and a warmth about her that simply sparkled. She had a way of making people feel good just by being around her. Her goodness came naturally, and she touched more lives than she probably ever realized.
Peggy devoted 30 years to serving the Village of Glen Carbon, beginning her career in 1987 and retiring as Village Clerk in April 2017. Throughout those years, she helped strengthen the Village Clerk’s office and contributed to projects that benefited the community, including local parks and trails. She was respected for her knowledge, dedication, and willingness to help others. Peggy took pride in her work and approached her responsibility to the residents of Glen Carbon with sincerity, compassion, and a genuine commitment to serving them well.
In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her siblings, Jerry Stagner and Gail Fiess.
She leaves behind her devoted husband of 50 years, John Goudy of Glen Carbon, Illinois; her loving children, Crystal (David) Kientzel of Troy, Illinois, Jessica (Aaron) May of Edwardsville, Illinois, and Leah Goudy (Jimmy Brereton) of Chicago, Illinois; her dear brother, Billy Stagner of San Antonio, Texas; her beloved grandchildren, Kaelynn, Aidan, Wyatt, and Charlee; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and wonderful friends.
She will be remembered for the kindness she showed so naturally, the love she gave so freely, and the way she made people feel, simply by being herself. She meant so much to so many, but to her family, she was everything. She will be loved and missed beyond words.
In celebration of her life, a memorial gathering will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2026, at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road, Glen Carbon, Illinois.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Siteman Cancer Center for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided Peggy and throughout her journey.
