Richard Mattson

Richard John Mattson, born on May 26, 1961, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on November 16, 2024. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and friend whose life was marked by a deep love for his family, his passions, wonder friends, and his work.

Richard earned his MBA after attending college, and he dedicated much of his professional life to helping others. He worked in Maintenance at the Battered Women's Shelter of St. Louis, where his quiet strength and commitment to the well-being of others left a lasting impact. Richard was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Alton, where his faith and kindness touched many lives.

An outdoors enthusiast, Richard found joy in many pursuits. He was an avid runner and cyclist, having completed the Great River Road Run multiple times. He also enjoyed playing golf, often spending hours on the course, and had a special appreciation for music. Richard was a talented guitarist and a lifelong music lover, often sharing his love for melody and rhythm with those around him.

Richard's entrepreneurial spirit led him to open State House Square Brewery, where he created a space for friends and strangers alike to gather and enjoy craft beer in a warm, welcoming environment. But above all, Richard’s greatest joy in life came from the time he spent with his beloved family. His children, Jenna Stemm and Drew Mattson, and his grandchildren, Hope Mattson, Reece Mattson, and Nash Stemm, were his pride and joy. Richard’s love for his family was boundless, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

In addition to his family, Richard was known for his deep love and care for animals, especially his dogs and cats. His kindness, generosity, and sense of humor touched all who knew him, and his presence will be missed dearly.

Richard is survived by his children, a son and daughter-in-law, Drew and Hadleigh Mattson of University City, MO, and a daughter, Jenna Stemm (Daniel Weirich) of Godfrey, IL; three wonderful grandchildren, Nash Stemm, Reece Mattson, and Hope Mattson; three sisters and their spouses, Susan and Rick Monical, Debbie and Greg Gates, and Jennifer and Brian Belluomini, and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 10 a.m. until the time of a Celebration of Life at 12 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Alton with Rev. Kyle Armentrout Stewart officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Deacon's Fund at First Presbyterian Church of Alton.

Richard’s legacy of love, laughter, and service to others will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
