Robert Merritt

Robert Charles Edward Merritt, age 81, of O’Fallon, Ill., born July 14, 1944 in Red Level, Alabama, passed away Monday, September 22, 2025. 

Charles, originally from Pensacola, Fla., met and married the love of his life Patricia, and they were married for 35 years. Charles enjoyed fishing, bird hunting and deer hunting.  His presence left a lasting impression on those he met and spent time with. Charles will be remembered with deep respect, fondness and love by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Charles is survived by his wife, Patricia Peterson Schulte Merritt and his brother Foy (Carol) Merritt, sister Dorothy (Rodney) Dunaway; his children, Christine M. (James) Fincher, Michael (Judy) Merritt, Denise M. (Brian) Waller, Dawn Watson, Ryan (Kristy) Schulte and Reid (Michele) Schulte. He also leaves behind 22 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Julius Robert and Ruby V. Merritt, parents-in-law Robert and Lois Peterson, stepson Paul “Rob” Schulte, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pam and Robert Combs.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Charles’ doctors and nursing staff at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for their compassionate care and support during his time there.
