Sharon Schreckenberg

Sharon Schreckenberg, age 84, formerly of Caseyville, Illinois, passed away September 24, 2026, at the Benedictine Living Community at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. Born August 23, 1942, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Sharon lived a life filled with love for her family, devotion to her faith, and care for those around her.

Sharon met her future husband, Gerard, at a local dance, and dancing at Tiny’s became part of their story together. They married July 8, 1961, in Kelso, Missouri, and moved to Caseyville, Illinois, in 1967. Together, they raised five children. As a loving mother and homemaker, Sharon devoted herself to her family and was always ready to lend a hand when relatives or friends needed her.

As her children grew older, Sharon returned to school, earning an associate degree, followed by a bachelor’s degree and a graduate degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Her determination and commitment to learning were an example to her family. She went on to a long and successful career as an accountant with the Farmers Home Administration in St. Louis.

Sharon’s generosity extended well beyond her home. A member of St. Albert the Great Parish for more than 50 years, she later continued her active faith alongside Gerard at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She volunteered at the Holy Trinity Preschool, was elected to the O’Fallon Township High School Board, and helped people seeking employment through her church’s Job Club. In each of these roles, she gave her time and talent to care for others.

Her love was evident in the everyday things she did: caring for children, helping a friend, making time for family.

Sharon enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and canning fresh vegetables and fruit. She treasured time with her children and grandchildren, including being the loudest fan at their games and school events and teaching the granddaughters to make chicken and dumplings and other family favorites. She often babysat neighborhood children during her years in Caseyville. Her love was evident in the everyday things she did: caring for children, helping a friend, making time for family, especially her famous fried chicken dinners on Friday nights. Those acts of kindness remain a lasting imprint on all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerard; her parents, Lyman and Marjorie (née Ludwig) Bollinger; her brother, Steve Bollinger; her brother-in-law, Matt Hogan; and her daughter-in-law, Julie Schreckenberg.

Surviving are her children, Linda (Don) Poggemoeller, Sheila Quirk-Bailey, Alan (Laura) Schreckenberg, Jason Schreckenberg, and Amanda (Dan) Ranieri; her grandchildren, Andrew (Katie) Schreckenberg, Lynn (Thomas) Cooper, Abby Poggemoeller, Sarah (Sam) Katzen, Jacob Quirk, Katlynn (Paul) Klarich, Alisa Schreckenberg, Regan Schreckenberg, and Nolan and Logan Ranieri; her great-grandchildren, Coen Schreckenberg, Rhett Cooper, Griffin Katzen, and Eleanor Katzen; her twin sister, Karen (Justin) Elfrink; her other siblings, Charlotte Hogan, Margaret (Glenn) Lawrence, Reneé (Rick) Aufdenberg, and Keith (Jean) Bollinger; and her sister-in-law, Sue Bollinger.

The family will receive friends from 8–10 a.m., Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 505 Fountains Pkwy, Fairview Heights, Illinois.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the church, with Rev. Carl Schrage presiding. Burial will follow at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, Illinois.
