Shirley J. Hanfelder, 89, passed away Friday, January 16, 2026 at OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital.

Born Oct. 10, 1936 in St. Louis, she was the daughter of Clarence and Margaret (Hackett) Hopkins.

She married Arthur W. “Art” Hanfelder Oct. 10, 1988.  He passed away Jan. 25, 2017.

Shirley and Art owned and operated the Bethalto Inn from 1989-1995.  She also worked at the Wood River Moose Lodge for 14 years and the Alton-Godfrey Sportsman’s Club for 28 years, making many friends along the way.

Survivors include her children, Debbie (Kenny) Ragan of Bethalto, Steve Seymour of Aiken, SC, Amy (Mark) Fair of Bethalto, and David (Penny Heaton) Seymour of Godfrey; 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren; a brother, Bill (Theresa) Hopkins of the Chicago area; a sister-in-law, Glenda Hopkins of St. Louis; and her grand-dog, Sadie.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Thomas Hopkins; and her beloved cat of 22 years, Sophie.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22 at Paynic Home for Funerals, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23.  Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
