Shirley L. Bruns, 79, passed away at 1:35 am Sunday, August 7, 2016, at Eden Village in Glen Carbon.

She was born on May 11, 1937, in Granite City, the daughter of Mervin and Oma (Hoekstra) Oetken.

She married Alden Dwane Bruns on November 18, 1956, in Bethalto. He survives.

Shirley was an assistant to the school nurse for the Bethalto School District for 17 years. She was the longest living member of Bethalto Presbyterian Church at the time of her death. She was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Bethalto and enjoyed painting and bowling. For several years Shirley enjoyed the company of her bichon puppy, Muffin.

Survivors include three children and their spouses, Diana and Francis Lockwood of Edwardsville, Doug and Robin Bruns of Meadowbrook, Matt and Lori Bruns of Coal City; five grandchildren and their spouses, Nick Lockwood and Anna Kinsella, Alyssa Bruns, Drake Bruns, Julie Bruns, Jeff and Cassie Bruns; and a sister and her spouse, Mary and Lowell Brown of Bethalto.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Jeff Bruns.

According to her wishes, her remains have been donated to the Washington U. School of Medicine.

Memorials may be made to Bethalto Presbyterian Church.
