Sister Mary Ann Haug, 97, entered life eternal on December 4, 2011 at St. Clare’s Villa in Alton, IL. Formerly known as Dorothy Barbara Haug, Sister Mary Ann spent all of her active ministry in education, including four pivotal years in the 1950s as novice mistress for the Sisters of Divine Providence in St. Louis.
Sister Mary Ann was born to Adolph and Anna Marie (Arnold) Haug on October 7, 1914, in Brussels, Ill. She entered the Sisters of Divine Providence in the Province of St. Peter in Pittsburgh in 1930 and took Mary Ann as her religious name, in honor of Jesus’s mother and grandmother. She celebrated her 80th Jubilee with the Divine Providence community in 2010. She graduated from St. Louis University in 1941 with a bachelor of science in sociology, with a minor in psychology.
Sister Mary Ann’s teaching ministry began at St. Mark School in Venice, Ill. (1933-38, and as principal, 1947-52). She also taught at Mount Providence School in Normandy, Mo. (1941-45, 1969-91 and as principal, 1960-62), St. Joseph School in Meppen, Ill., St. Stanislaus School in Wardsville, Mo. (1952-56), St. Mary’s School in Madison, Ill. (1962-69, both teacher and principal). She also taught for one year at St. Pius X School in Shreveport, La.
Sister Mary Ann is survived by her nephews Alfred (Jackie) Haug and William (Betty) Haug, her great nephews Larry Crouch and John Haug, her great nieces Donna Haug, Kathy Haug, Jamie Haug, Kathy Collins and Maria Jones, and hundreds of Sisters of Divine Providence and Divine Providence Associates. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Lawrence Haug and Msgr. William Haug, and her sister, Mary William Haug, CDP.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2011with a Rosary wake service at 7:00 p.m. at Staten-Fine Funeral Home, 220 Court Street, Alton, IL.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 7 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 519 East 4th Street, Alton, IL.
Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, MO.
