Wilma A. “Wimpy” Sawyer, 90, died at 1:20 p.m. Friday, February 19, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. Born April 16, 1925 in St. Louis, MO, she was the daughter of Walter and Zita (Comte) Barnes. Mrs. Sawyer graduated from St. Joseph Hospital Nursing School in 1947. She worked in hospitals in Florida, California and Minnesota as well as for Dr. James McCloskey in Alton and Dr. John LeBlenc in Cottage Hills. She was also a registered nurse for the Olin Corporation. She was an avid golfer and enjoyed wood carving and oil panting and was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. On February 7, 1948 she married Bert J. Sawyer in Perryville, MO. He preceded her in death on August 17, 2002. Surviving is a sister and brother-in-law, Zita and Bud Holden of Alton and many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Leo Barnes and a sister, Vivian Hayden. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:30 p.m. Monday, February 22, 2016 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church followed by burial at 3:00 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Perryville, MO.
