Southern Door head coach Dan McCarty was all smiles in the booth Friday after the the Eagles picked up their first win of the season, 26-20 over Valders. It was McCarty's first win as the new coach and he took home the game ball. The Eagles never trailed in the game and played extremely well on all fronts.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard after the first of two field goals from Keegan Kroening from 29 yards out. They soon followed it up with a 24-yard strike from Mitchel Neubauer to Mitchell Gerend making the score 10-0. The Eagles went into halftime up 17-0 after a Nolen Wagner 19-yard touchdown scamper and would not allow Valders to score until six minutes into the third quarter. The Eagles would add their final scores on a 49-yard touchdown pass from Neubauer to Gerend hooking up for their second score and another field goal from Kroening from 37 yards out.
On special teams, Kroening kicked two field goals and Cal McCarty punted very well for the Eagles, putting three punts inside the ten yard line. The Eagles were balanced on offense. Neubauer threw for 157 yards and two scores, Wagner rushed for 137 yards with a touchdown and Gerend added 103 yards receiving with two touchdowns. Defensively, the Eagles forced three interceptions - Neubauer had two of them and Gerend grabbed the other.
Southern Door will enjoy the win for the weekend, and then it’s rivalry week. The Eagles travel to Sturgeon Bay next Friday night. The Clippers enter (0-5) following a 50-2 loss to Kewaunee.
