U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is declining to endorse Gov. Pat Quinn, despite the fact Quinn is now running unopposed in the Democratic primary. Durbin has been critical of Quinn in the past for not being able to resolve the state’s pension problems.

“I stand by what I said earlier,” Durbin said. “We have a responsibility as Democrats who are in control of the legislature and the governor’s office to solve the biggest problem facing our state, and that’s the pension crisis.”

The two have been at odds before, when Quinn lost to Durbin in the 1996 Democratic primary for the Senate.

Durbin said he will be meeting with Quinn this weekend while they’re both in Springfield for the Democratic slating session. Durbin believes the Democratic State Central Committee will endorse both his and Quinn’s bids for re-election.
