University of Illinois, Community College Open Food Pantries

Sep 23, 2013 8:14 AM

The University of Illinois and a community college in Champaign are opening food pantries to meet what they believe is a need among college students.

Sister Maryann Schaefer at the university's St. John Catholic Newman Center isn't sure how many students need more food than they can buy. But she said the university administration believes there is a particular gap among graduate students and upperclassmen.

Campus food pantries have opened in recent years around the country to help students who don't have enough money to cover their expenses and keep themselves well-fed. In many cases they have families, too.

Schaefer says she expects many of the students who need help to be international students.

According to reports, a second pantry will open at Parkland College.
