City Council Could Consider Changing City's Liquor, Gaming Codes

Sep 23, 2013 8:31 AM

TheClintonCityCouncilwill consider a change in the video gaming and liquor codes.

The city's current liquor code allows sales until midnight and no sales on Sunday's. Clinton Mayor Carolyn Peters explains the gaming machines at these various establishments are controlled by an outside monitor, and shuts them down at the hours the city's ordinance states.

According to Mayor Peters, she approached the state about the exceptions they have for the rules. She notes she explains the way the businesses have used them in the past.

Because the establishments in Clinton are not getting the benefit of these special hours, one business has approached the Mayor about opening liquor sales on Sunday's. Opening up liquor sales would allow the gaming machines to be on according to the change in the city ordinance.

The Mayor last week approached the other members of the City Council about opening up Sunday's for liquor sales in Clinton establishments. She explains she would not vote for this change.

Mayor Peters says unless pressure comes from other communities for these machines to be allowed for special, limit times, she doesn't see this policy the State has changing.

She notes she wanted the Council to think about this and come back at their first October meeting and be ready to discuss.
