Rock Island City Council Votes to Move Forward with Jumers Crossing Development

Sep 24, 2013 6:35 AM

The Rock Island City Council has voted to move forward with plans for the Jumers Crossing retail development despite concerns from Big Island residents over the removal of a flood levee. At last night's Rock Island City Council meeting the council decided to move forward with the project because the retail development around Jumers Casino is what the council feels is necessary to keep the casino competitive. Residents of Big Island opposed the plan because it involves the destruction of a flood levee which they feel is necessary for protecting their homes. The council offered no details on what would be done to address residents' concerns about the loss of the levee. The debate over the Jumers Crossing retail development is not over however, as the flood levee is not the property of the City of Rock Island but rather the Village of Milan. The City is discussing legal options related to taking control of the levee so that the retail development can move forward.
