City of Charleston Outlines Construction Projects

Sep 24, 2013 6:45 AM

The 2013 construction season is slowly coming to an end as warm temperatures and sunny skies will give way to temperatures below freezing and gray clouds taking their place in the sky. Construction will continue until the last possible day and Charleston City Manager Scott Smith hopes that won't be until late October into November. According to Smith, progress on the 9th Street project continues to move forward.

The hope for this project was to have it 100% complete by the start of the 2013-2014 school year, but the city didn't quite make that goal a reality. Smith, though, is happy that the project has come on par with the budget.

The 9th Street Project does hamper what else could be done around town, but Smith told WRJM News that some Sidewalk Projects and Utility Projects are slated for the fall before the colder temperatures and the first frost and snowfall moves in.

Budgeting for certain projects every year depend on the Motor Fuel Tax funds that the city receives. The city each year does decide what particular jobs around town do qualify for those funds and then go out and make it happen. Those projects are all outlined by the City's Five-Year Plan that is established at their annual retreat.

Of course, Smith would like to see the city stick to that plan, but things change from year to year as certain projects that they didn't plan for take precedent.
