Mattoon Police Investigating an Attempted Burglary

Mattoon Police are investigating an attempted Burglary that occurred on September 19th at 11:00 pm.

Police were called to the 1800 block of Broadway Avenue in regards to a severely injured man in the roadway. Officers found the injured man to be in possession of a backpack with various burglary tools therein. Officers then observed a rope hanging from the roof of the Little Mexico Restaurant.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect, 23-year-old Maverick C. Bowman, of Mattoon, allegedly intended to break into the business by rappelling from the roof down to an office window. Bowman lost his grip on said rope and fell 2 stories, through an awning, and then onto the pavement below.

Bowman was taken to the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, and then transferred to Carle Hospital where he is expected to remain for some time. A summons to Coles County Circuit Court will be sought at a future date.
