Brewers & Braves Benches Clear During Lohse’s stellar Outing

Brewers starting pitcher Kyle Lohse saved his absolute best for last in a 4-0 win. A complete
game shutout against National League East Division champion Atlanta Braves was quite possibly the best Milwaukee pitching performance of the 2013 season.

Unfortunately the pitching performance was out shadowed nationally by a first inning bench clearing brawl between the two clubs initiated by Milwaukee center fielder Carlos Gomez. After blasting a solo homerun off Atlanta starter Paul Maholm, Gomez started yelling at the pitcher. His vocal displeasure stemmed from a bean ball he took in the leg in a June 23rd meeting.

While rounding the bases, Gomez was stopped by Braves’ catcher Brian McCann before the benches cleared and a few swings were exchanged. Gomez never touched home plate but was still credited with the run.

After an explosive first half inning, Kyle Lohse allowed a leadoff bunt single. He then retired 20 batters in a row. His efficiency may have been most impressive. The former St. Louis Cardinal threw only 54 pitches through six innings.
