A group of Republican lawmakers led by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos want to flip the way complaints about race-based school mascots in Wisconsin are handled.
Under the new plan, a complaint from a single person would not be enough to trigger a hearing, the hearing would NOT be in front of the Department of Public Instruction, but instead the Department of Administration, and the burden of proof would be on the person filing – not the school district.
The Wisconsin Indian Education Association blasted the proposal this afternoon.
Thirty-three state school districts – including Kewaunee – changed their mascots to follow the rules laid down in 2009.
