Judge Rules In Favor Of Peabody And Patriot Coal

Sep 27, 2013 5:21 PM

Debbie Totten - Metro News

A federal judge is siding with Peabody and its spinoff company Patriot Coal in a benefits dispute, but the battle still isn't over.  United Mine Workers had filed a suit, claiming Peabody purposely created spinoff companies so it would not have to continue paying benefits to retirees.  Patriot Coal is now bankrupt.

A judge today ruled in favor of Peabody, saying the law does not protect the stability of pension funds.  UMW officials say they will appeal the judge's decision.
