Great River Road Bikeway Needs Upgrades

As work crews worked to clean up the Great River Road Bikeway recently, the extent of disrepair became evident, and now the Managing Director of Madison County Transit says the trail is in need of repairs in many places.  The problem is how to pay for it and who would do the work, according to Jerry Kane.  He says there are a number of issues facing the aging bike path that links Alton and Grafton along the Great River Road.

Kane comments

He says State Representative Dan Beiser and State Senator Bill Haine are looking at ways to address the issue.  Kane says the first order of business needs to be fixing the trail, and then it should be handed over to some local entity for regular upkeep.  He stresses IDOT should not be that agency, as they are charged with upkeep and maintenance for the motoring public.
