Blue Ridge Schools Support Sales Tax Increase For Schools

Sep 30, 2013 8:09 AM

Earlierinthemonth, the Clinton School District introduced the idea of implementing a one-percent sales tax for the County's schools.

The County's Schools include Clinton, DeLand-Weldon, and Blue Ridge Schools. Susan Wilson, Superintendent of Blue Ridge Schools explains the distribution of the money generated from the tax is based on the size of the districts in the county. Wilson notes, the Blue Ridge School District could potentially benefit from this tax from McLean and DeWitt Counties.

According to Wilson, the School Board for Blue Ridge is very interested in working with the Clinton School District towards this. She says the money has to go towards either school facilities or tax abatement.

The Blue Ridge Board of Education has thrown around preliminary ideas of things to use the money for. Wilson explains the money could go towards Health, Life, Safety improvements, tax abatement, facility improvements, and even new additions such as a track or upgrading their weight room.

The voters first would have to approve the tax increase proposal through referendum in the spring.
