Shady Bowl Speedway closed out its 2013 season with the running of the Max Evans Memorial for the Ohio Valley Dwarf Cars Saturday night.
The 25-lapper saw veteran driver Jim Frederick lead the first two counters before giving way to Brandon Bayse. Bayse then set his sights on the checker as he led until lap nineteen when Daniel Wirick sped by. Wirick saw his feature win hopes dashed when rookie Jason Hitchcock (pictured left) sped by going into turn three of the final lap. Hitchcock led the next quarter lap to post his third win of the season. Jason’s Hitchcock Trucking backed racer was followed by Wirick, Chris Hull, Bayse, and Brian Marsh. Bayse was the dash winner with Marsh taking the heat win.
The 30-lap late model feature was a crash-filled event with most cars finishing with some sort of damage. Columbus driver Ray Muncy paced the field the first four laps before giving way to Jamie Hunt. Hunt led until Mark Parker took over the lead. Parker’s time out front was short as Columbus driver George Lindsey (pictured right) pulled off an outside pass. Lindsey led the next six laps before Parker reclaimed the lead. Parker looked to have the race won as he took the white flag out front. It was not to be however, as Lindsey retook the lead on the final go round. The win was the first in ten years for Lindsey in his Computer Saves backed ride. Parker, Hunt, Bobby Justus, and Ray Muncy filled out the top five. Hunt was the dash winner with the heat checker going to Justus.
The modified feature saw rookie Logan McPherson out front the first five laps. Kettering driver Mike Carroll (pictured left) took over the top spot in his McDonald’s/Moore Trucking sponsored car on lap six and never looked back. Carroll went on to post his second win of the season with Buddy Townsend second, Chris Parker third, Shane Shirk fourth, and McPherson fifth. Parker took the dash checker with Jamie Sites and Ross Wells taking home heat win money.
The 20-lap Hot Rodz Auto Sales street stocks saw Fairborn’s Jim Lewis Jr. (pictured right) pass Chad Brandyberry on lap nine. Lewis went on to win his third straight feature in his Rubber Seal backed Camaro. Brandyberry held on for second with Josh Sage third, Dave Sage fourth, and Scott Sullenberger fifth. Lewis was the four-lap dash winner with Josh Longstreth and Bo Hoelscher winning heat races.
The compact feature was a hard fought event with drivers running wide open the whole race. A lot of paint trading and ruffled feathers ensued before the checker waved over New Carlisle’s Jay Lakins Jr. (pictured left) in his Wholesale Auto Parts four cylinder. Kenny George, Matt Jackson, Rob Sharp, and Nick Philbeck finished second through fifth. Lakins was the dash winner with the heat going to Matt Jackson.
The 2013 Shady Bowl Champions Banquet will be held January 18th at the Champaign County Fairgrounds.
