Final Phase of 110 MPH Upgrades Start On Amtrak

Workers are entering the final phases of upgrades that will someday allow Amtrak trains between Chicago and St. Louis to travel at up to 110 mph.

Amtrak officials say the construction work includes new rail with concrete ties, upgrades to bridges and signal equipment installations.

Starting Oct. 16, there'll be bus service for sections of Amtrak routes. The work will last eight days.

The changes mean Amtrak will be able to operate at speeds of up to 110 mph, which is a jump from the current maximum of 79 mph.

Some sections already allow the higher speed, including a section between Dwight to Pontiac.
