A recent Illinois task force made recommendations regarding physical education and Dr. Ty Wolf, Superintendent of Heyworth Schools, explains Illinois is one of the only states that requires P.E. on a daily basis. He says research has shown there is a distinct connection between cognitive learning and the amount of exercise students gets.

Studies have shown kids in better shape have better memory and ability to think. Heyworth High School recently received a grant which provided them new heart monitors. Students will now be able to measure their physical activity during P.E. classes. Dr. Wolf says it's a change in how schools can look at P.E. due to students being able to chart their growth.

Dr. Wolf adds these new additions to P.E. are teaching students to be fitness minded through their lives. The teachers are teaching kids how to set goals and be more self-motivated.

Dr. Wolf says the grant for the heart monitors was in conjunction with Illinois State University. He feels they're being put to good use so far.
