Shutdown Forces Closure of Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and WRNHP

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge Manager Tom Jasikoff declined comment on the Government Shutdown when reached by Finger Lakes News Radio today.

 

Jasikoff pointed us instead to a written statement they sent saying the refuge is closed to the public until further notice. Enough staff will be kept on for security and building upkeep.

Otherwise activities and public programs will be cancelled. This includes events scheduled for October: Waterfowl hunting reservations; Youth Waterfowl Hunt; Opening day of waterfowl hunting and subsequent hunting days during the shutdown; the MARSH! volunteer work day this Saturday; the Chili Taste Off on Saturday, the 19; National Wildlife Refuge Week Celebration and Art Show on the  20th; any scheduled school and bus tour trips. 

The Visitor Center, Nature Store, all trails and viewing areas, and the refuge office are closed.

In Seneca Falls, the Women's Rights National Historical Park is also closed. A sign on the door to the park's visitor's center on Fall Street greeted visitors this morning.

Park maintenece workers were seen today working between the park properties on Fall, Water, and Washington Streets in Seneca Falls were the National Park Service owns properties.
