Mayor Justin Nickels wants a 1.99% increase in the Manitowoc city assessed tax rate for 2014. The Mayor said the increase was proposed during the 2013 budget deliberations as part of the plan to alleviate high debt repayments; complete the transition from borrowing to a pay-as-you-go approach by 2018; and set course to get back to fiscal accountability over the next 5 years. His Honor will hold listening sessions on the proposed 2014 budget at city hall on Thursday, Oct. 24th, at 10:30 A.M. & at 6:30 P.M.

 About 800,000 federal workers are clearing desks before they are furloughed as the federal government partially shuts down today. Even though they won't be working, all past shut-downs have seen workers getting paid for those days when the shut-down ends.

Gov. Walker is checking having the state provide its own health insurance for employees. A consultant says the savings (by avoiding Obamacare fees & taxes) would be about 4 or 5%, At least 20 other states self-insure their workers.
