Two 17-year-old Triad students narrowly avoided tragedy when their car slammed into the back of a stopped Triad school bus during a downpour Friday afternoon just before 3 p.m.
The accident occurred on Brush Lake Road near Triad High School. Deputies reported that the Honda Civic was actually wedged under the back of the bus, which was carrying 26 middle- and high-school passengers, none of whom reported injuries. WHIO-TV quoted a deputy as saying that had the Civic traveled one foot farther, the two teens may have been killed.
Both the driver and the passenger in the car suffered injuries. North Lewisburg EMS transported the pair to Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana. They were then taken to Miami Valley Hospital by a CareFlight ground crew.
A second bus was called to the scene to transport the students from the bus to their homes. Brush Lake Road was closed while the accident was being cleared.
Champaign County deputies continue their investigation of the crash.
