A 49-year-old Manitowoc man was sentenced to probation and jail for his sixth-offense operating while intoxicated.

Manitowoc County Circuit Judge Jerome Fox on Sept. 3 stayed a one-year prison sentence followed by three years of extended supervision for Scott A. Novy, 864 S. Rapids Road.

Fox placed Novy on probation for three years with the condition he spend one year in jail, with work-release privileges, starting immediately. Novy also was ordered to pay $3,540 in fines and costs.

According to the criminal complaint: Manitowoc police on Dec. 19 were called to Superior Liquor for the report of a man trying to get into the store. Prior to their arrival, officers received a call that he had left the store and his vehicle was crossing the center line.

Police stopped him in the 4600 block of Dewey Street. His speech was slurred, his eyes were blood-shot and watery and he smelled of intoxicants. Novy failed the field sobriety test and was arrested. His blood-alcohol level was 0.225. Previous OWI convictions were in 2005, three in 2001, and one in 1998.

Other conditions of probation include undergoing an intoxicated driver assessment and driver safety plan; undergoing assessment, treatment and counseling; maintaining absolute sobriety; paying supervision fees; and providing a DNA sample. His driver’s license was suspended for 36 months and ignition interlock was ordered for the same amount of time. He has credit for one day.
