Just in time for Halloween Illinois farmers say this year's pumpkin crop should be one of state's finest in years. The "Courier-News" in Elgin says the wetter-than-normal spring combined with the late-summer weather has resulted in a bumper crop for the orange-hued globes. Illinois is actually the country's top producer of pumpkins.
Last year the state yielded 625-million pounds of pumpkins, one-third of all pumpkins in the nation.
