The Panther men’s soccer team dropped a 3-1 Summit League contest at in-state rival Western Illinois on Saturday, Oct. 5. EIU falls to 0-7-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference action.
Jake Brillhart gave the Panthers an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute, scoring off a cross set up by Garet Christianson and Will Butler. The sophomore midfielder now has three goals on the year. With 51 seconds remaining before intermission, Husref Jupic knotted the match at one for the Fighting Leathernecks (2-8, 1-1 Summit).
Diego Lopez put the Leathernecks ahead, 2-1, in the 65th minute before Oscar Ortega scored his first goal of the season in the 82nd minute to seal the win for WIU.
WIU took 12 more shots (24-12) than EIU and committed 13 more fouls (22-9). The Panthers had four more corner kicks (6-2) in the loss.
Jake Plant led the Panthers with five shots (three on goal) while both Brillhart and Christianson added two shots (one on goal). Lopez paced WIU with five shots on goal.
Ben Feltes (0-4-1) took the loss in goal for EIU, allowing three goals and making eight saves. Yves Dietrich (2-8) earned the win for WIU, surrendering one goal and making four saves.
The Panthers return to action at UIC on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. for a non-conference match.
