State Rep Wants Mandatory Minimum Sentencing For Gun Crimes

Thefightover guns will likely continue in Springfield as lawmakers head back later this month. State rep Michael Zalewski [[ Za-less-kee ]] says there should be mandatory minimum sentences for people who are busted with guns but shouldn’t have them.

Rep. Zalewski says implementing mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes is one way to help law enforcement officials crack down on high crime rates.

Zalewski’s bill would also enhance penalties for convicted felons who are caught carrying a gun. If convicted, people could serve up to four years behind bars. Chicago Law enforcement officials are calling for mandatory minimums, claiming tighter laws will help cut back on some of the violence in their streets. Zalewski hopes to call the bill for a vote during veto session but says there’s no guarantee that’ll happen.
