Apple N' Pork Festival Provides Farmers Market With Great Opportunity For Outreach

The45thAnnualApple & Pork Festival proved to be a success for the local Farmers & Artisans Market.
The Farmers' Market has seen a steady turnout the last few years on the downtown square. Elizabeth Burns, with the DeWitt County Farmers and Artisans Market, says their location on the square is very beneficial. She feels the Market featured a variety of produce, which allows consumers to interact with the person who grew the food.
The Farmers Market encourages citizens to buy produce locally. She says various studies show anywhere from $3-$7 is generated from every dollar invested locally. She says the Illinois Farmers Market Association has challenged Illinois families to take $10 of their weekly grocery budget and spend it at a local Farmers Market.
The majority of vendors at the Farmers Market are local. Some vendors travel anywhere from ten to sixty miles to participate in the Clinton Saturday morning market. She says many weekends they will have vendors that grow specialty produce you are not going to find in your traditional grocery stores.
Vendors wishing to participate in the Apple & Pork Festival weekend market need to participate in their regular market at least once during the year. The Clinton Market runs from May until late October and features special recipes and cookbooks derived from the produce being sold that day.
