Sonya Smith

Sonya Smith, 48, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2012 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

  Born Dec. 15, 1963 in Fort Wayne, Ind., she was the daughter of Russell L. Sr. and Margaret (Seaburn) Schaaf.  They both preceded her in death.

  She worked in home health care for the State of Illinois out of Hartford, and for DORIS Helping Hand.  Sonya loved helping people.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Brighton.

  She married Charles E. Smith Jan. 7, 1994 in East Alton.  He passed away Aug. 6, 2002.

  Survivors include a daughter, Kassandra Smith of South Roxana; two sons, Matthew Seets, currently serving in Afghanistan and Christopher Smith, both of South Roxana; two stepdaughters, Bonnie Kerns and Toni Hodge, both of Norris City, Ill.; a stepson, Randal Smith of Worden; multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters, Gail (Roger) Ambrose of Kokomo, Ind. and Lisa (Daniel) Sackmann of Jerseyville, Ill.; and three brothers, David (Carol) Schaaf of Noblesville, Ind., Russell Jr. (Lisa) Schaaf of Toledo, Oh. and Michael (Kristi) Schaaf of Finley, Oh.

  Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, July 6 at Paynic Home for Funerals, where Pastor Rob Ellard will officiate services at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 7.

  Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

  Memorials may be made for the care of her children and will be accetped at the funeral home.
