George Stanich

Wood River |

On January 23, 2016 at 8:30 pm surrounded by his family, the dear Lord took our beloved love one, George M. Stanich to heaven.

Our father was born July 27, 1927 in Wood River, IL to George and Agnes (Valvoda) Stanich.  Throughout his young life he attended Wood River Elementary grade school and East Alton Wood River High School, and he was proud to have played on the football team.  As a junior, in high school, our father signed up to fight in WWII.  He became a sailor in the United States Navy, West Pacific 7th Fleet.

After he returned from the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Vera Noe on June 7, 1947.  They became parents to three children, George J. Stanich (Marlene) of East Alton, Veronica A. (Stanich) Galletta (Roland) of Holiday Shores, and Diana M. Stanich) Jones (Gerry) of Holiday Shores.

As a young adult he took great pride being Scout Master of Knights of Columbus Troop 37.  Our father also belonged to the American Legion and a very proud member of the NRA.

In 1990 he retired from Olin as a pipefitter and enjoyed the rest of his life being surrounded by his grandchildren, Kimberly (Stanich) Carstens, Steve Stanich, Chris Galletta, Laura Jones, Lance Jones, Tony Galletta and Joshua Jones.

As years passed he became a great grandpa, but the children called him grandpa great; Tyler, Brendon, Colton, Ashley and Amber Carstens, Kason and Nolan Jones and McKinlee Galletta.

Our father is survived by a sister, Evelyn Freezeland of Roxana and his nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death and sadly missed by the family, his parents, a brother, Joseph Stanich, a sister, Mildred (Saya) Stanich, a granddaughter, Veronica Traci Galletta, a grandson, Chad Mikel Ingram and a great grandson, Ty Jones.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 10:30 am Friday, January 29, 2016 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

A funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am Friday, January 29, 2016 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Wood River with Father James Flach as celebrant.
