Jean Kallal

Jean Marie Pistorius Kallal, 79, died at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 2009 at her residence after a courageous 19 month battle with acute leukemia.

She was born in Peoria on Feb. 23, 1930, the daughter of the late William R. and Mildred (Followell) Shivers. Jean married Virgil Pistorius in 1950, and together they were the parents of eight children, until his untimely death in 1967.  After his death, Jean took her family under her wings, and began a 30 year career in the radio and newspaper business.  She first began at WJBM Radio in Jerseyville, and later became a reporter for the Alton Telegraph, was the editor of the Democrat News in Jerseyville and retired in 1996 from the News Journal. A civic minded individual Jean was devoted to her community and church. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church as well as their Altar Society, and member of the Jersey County Chamber of Commerce as well as their Ambassadors. She served on many boards, namely the American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, served as the Jersey County represenative on the Private Industry Council, Co-Chaired the Jerseyville 1984 Sesquicentennial booklet and publicity committee, a Girl Scout leader, and was a member of the Jersey County Republicans, and served as an election judge in Jersey County. In 1975, she married Louis Gorman, and they shared a few years together before his death in 1980.
She later married Valentine Kallal on July 12, 1996 at the St. Francis Xavier Church in Jerseyville, and they have spent and shared the past 13 years together.

Surviving are her husband, Valentine Kallal; eight children & their spouses, Mark Pistorius of Colo, Iowa, Stephen & Mary Pistorius of Granite City, Kurt & Eve Pistorius of Centennial, Co., Carol & Gary Robeen of Hardin, Dianna and Cliff Bigelow of Lake St. Louis, Mo., Eric & Lisa Pistorius of Jerseyville, Laurie & David Petras of Alton, and Lisa & Joe Scott of Edwardsville; 18 grandchildren, Nicholas, Emily & Andrew Pistorius, Matt, Rachel, and Sarah Pistorius, Amanda Pistorius, Jeramy & Ashley Robeen, Ben & Lauren Bigelow, Jessica Hansen, Heather Pinter, Tyler Pistorius, Jacob Petras, Danielle Porter, Julia & Jenna Leitner; a great granddaughter, Mila Williams; three sisters, Rosalie Gorden of Taylorville, Mary Joye of Surfside Beach, SC., and JoAnn Newland of Decatur.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m.. Thursday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father D. Patrick Gibbons officiating. Burial will take place later that afternoon at the Boody Cemetery in Boody, Illinois. Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville or to Masses.
