Leah Abromovich

Coulterville, IL |

Leah Elaine Abromovich, born on November 9, 1934, in Coulterville, Illinois, peacefully departed from this world on Sunday, March 24, 2024. She was the beloved daughter of Alexander Hood and Leah Helen (Baird) McCrary. As the only daughter in a family of six children, her roots were firmly planted in her rural experience, and she referred to her childhood as “the good old days”.

On May 11, 1957, Leah embarked on a life with her beloved husband, Philip Andrew Abromovich. Together, they built a loving family, raising three cherished children: Andy (Karen), Elaine (Bob) Kane, and Matthew (Melissa). Leah's greatest joy in life stemmed from the love and laughter shared with her eight adoring grandchildren: Drew and Dustin (Manda) Abromovich; Adam, Grace, Sam and Anna Kane; Abby and Alyssa Abromovich, and a great grandson, Kyler Abromovich.

Leah was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. She dedicated many years of her life to serving others, including through her work at the Social Security Administration. Her commitment to people was marked by diligence and compassion, touching the lives of many with her kindness and dedication.

Upon retirement, Leah embraced a new chapter of her life, one filled with the warmth of family gatherings and the simple pleasures of togetherness. Despite facing the challenges of Alzheimer's disease in her later years, Leah’s spirit remained resilient, responding to visitors with love and laughter.

Leah was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Kenneth, Floyd, Wilbur, Dean and Earl, as well as her husband, Philip, in 1988. Though separated by time, they are reunited once more in eternal peace.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that friends and family consider extending a gesture of kindness to a nursing home resident in Leah's honor. A delivery, phone call or visit will make that person's day.

Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2024, at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Belleville. All who knew and loved Leah are invited to join in honoring her memory.
