Robert “Bob” Donald Schmidt, 81, died Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at John Cochran VA Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Born August 18, 1935 in Alton, he was the son of V.A. and Martha Helen (Lamar) Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt served in the U.S. Army. He retired in 1997 from the ammunition shipping department of the Olin Corporation after over 40 years of service. He was a member of the St. Louis Mariners Club and loved model building especially airplanes, ships or trains. On October 2, 1964, he married the former Glenda Sue Hardesty in Alton. She survives. Also surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, Chad T. and April Schmidt of Troy, IL, two brothers, Bud Schmidt (Shirley) of San Jose, CA and Paul Schmidt (Linda) of Canyon Lake, TX, and a sister, Jane Yanis (Mike) of San Jose, CA. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Thomas Schmidt and a sister, Jeannette Stiles. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2017 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017. Pastor Randy Fischer will officiate. Burial will be at Elsah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Veteran’s Administration in Edwardsville.
