William Nelson Riggs, 82, died peacefully at home at 11:32 am on Thursday, January 3, 2013.
He was born September 18, 1930 to Cash C. Riggs and Daisy H. (McMillian) Riggs.
He married the former LeVona May Duelm on September 29, 1950 in Alton, IL. She preceded him in death on December 26, 2005.
He graduated from Alton High School in 1948 and attended Washington University, St Louis MO and Lewis and Clark Community College, Godfrey IL. He worked for Laclede Steel in Alton, IL for 36 years. After retirement he volunteered at St Anthony’s Health Center in Alton IL as a lab courier and escort for patient registration.
Survivors include a son, W. Bruce Riggs and wife Rose of San Antonio TX; a daughter, Brenda McCall and husband Richard of Marion IL; a son, Timothy E. Riggs and wife Sarah of Bethalto IL; four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two nephews, Jeff Towner and Dan Towner; one niece, Susan Edmonds; and dear friend, Rose Marie Bushnell.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John S. Riggs; a brother, Cash C. Riggs; two sisters, Eugenia Towner and Catherine Smith; and one nephew, Ricky Smith.
Visitation will be from 1:30 pm until a memorial service at 3:00 pm on Saturday, January 5, 2013 with the Rev. Martin Schultz officiating at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
Inurnment will be in Bethalto United Methodist Cemetery, Bethalto IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St Paul Lutheran Church, Wood River IL where he was a member.
